Sg-1 arrive on a new world and soon encounter a young boy running away from dogs. SG-1 scare the dogs away and the boy introduces himself as Abu of the Shavadi, the people of the Step. When Abu sees Sam, a woman, he gets very upset. Some more of Abu's people arrive and are also offended by Sam's presence, to the point of going to kill her. Daniel protests but Jack has to fire his gun to stop them. The leader of the Shavadi arrives and when he learns Sam saved Abu's life he invites them back as his guests to the Shavadi encampment. SG-1 accept even though Sam thinks it would be better to leave.
Sam gets SG-1 into strife.
Arriving at the village SG-1 are shown to a tent, inside Sam is told she can speak. Sam says she doesn't know what happened. The leader introduces himself as Mughal and says that for a woman to show her face in public and wearing mens clothes means death, luckily for Sam she saved Abu's life. Abu tells them that they have medicines and drugs, Sam wants to take a look, but is told she must be properly attired first.
Mughal, Abu and SG-1 talk.
That evening while the men are all at a party someone kidnaps Sam. The next day when Daniel comes to get her he finds she is gone. Abu has taken Sam hostage. He tells her that he will trade her for something that he has wanted for a long time. At the Shavadi camp Mughal says he will help SG-1 find Sam as his son took her. Abu takes Sam to another Mungol, Turgan, he asks to trade her for Turgans daughter, Nya, who he loves, but Turgan won't have it, his daughter will be married to a chief, Abu takes money instead.
Abu later comes back and talks to Nya, he tells her to run away with him and they arrange to meet later. Inside the camp Turgan talks to Sam about what she can do. She tells him that she does the work of men amoung her people. Turgan tells Sam that the spirits have sent her here to learn how to be a woman. Later Sam sees everyone leave the work area, she takes a knife and runs off but is recaptured.

Sam and Nya now talk, she tells Nya to say no to her father and she will help her do it.
Mughal and SG-1 arrive at Turgans camp and request trade. Sam sets the drapes on fire while everyone is distracted by the arrival, Nya runs off. SG-1 try too buy back Sam but Turgan won't have it, Jack has to give him his gun, they take Sam and leave as Turgan fires Jack's gun, luckily Jack only left a few rounds in the clip.
Early the next morning Abu arrives back, he tells them that Nya was recaptured by Turgan and that he is going to have her stoned to death, they must help him. Jack and Daniel want to stay out of it, but Sam says it is her fault. Mughal thinks up and old law to help them and they head off back to Turgan's camp.
At Turgans camp he forgives his daughter and his men prepare to stone her.

SG-1 arrive back just in time and Mughal challenges Turgans decision by challenging him to a duel, but Turgan refuses to fight a cripple. Sam challenges him instead and they start to fight. Sam wins quite easily but Nya asks her to spare her fathers life, she does only after he says they are all free to leave.
Back at the Shavadi camp Abu and Nya are too be married but SG-1 have to leave. As they do Mughal orders all the Shavadi free, it is how they will free Sam.
