SG-1 arrive on an alien world where the UAV has detected a village 11 clicks from the gate, they find a well used path heading in the right direction and follow it. They arrive at the village and find it has a church, it is a Christian civilisation. As they enter the village all the villagers run off.
SG-1 enter the village.
They find a woman chained to a stake and when they approach her a man comes out of a nearby house brandishing a cross at them, he thinks they have come to take the woman, Mary, away with them, he thinks that they are demons. They manage to convince the man, Simon, to listen to them and Teal'c frees Mary who the village Canon said was possessed and needed to be 'sacrificed' to the devil. Jack says he can help her as she is only sick, Simon agrees.
After giving Mary some medicine they hear a horn blowing and someone shouting the demon is coming, as SG-1 watch out of Simon's window they see a Unas enter the village and go up to the stake Mary was tied to, he shouts out that he wants 5 damned souls for his lord Satan (Sokar) by sunrise the next day.
The Unas enters the village.
SG-1 convince Simon that they can kill the Unas but then the Canon returns and brands them demons as they came through the Circle Of Darkness (Stargate), as Jack tries to talk to him he operates a ring device on his finger and they are all struck down by some lightening.
SG-1 are knocked out.
SG-1 awake and find they are imprisoned but Teal'c is not with them. Simon arrives and tells them that he believes they are not demons and can help them, he tells them that Teal'c will undergo the 'tests'. Teal'c is dragged out infront of everyone, the first test sees the Canon place a hot poker onto his forehead tattoo which he believes is the mark of the devil, Teal'c feels no pain and fails the test. The second test sees everyone taken to a lake, Teal'c is weighted down with rocks and thrown into the lake, he doesn't resurface and the Canon proclaims him a free soul.
Back at the village SG-1 are freed from their cell and told by the Canon to leave and never come back, Teal'c's body has been recovered from the lake and will be given a Christian burial. Simon comes to them before they leave and says that Mary is about to undergo the trepanning ceremony, he again asks for their help. Daniel goes to stop Simon from killing Mary and says that they can both come back to Earth with them. As they talk to Simon Teal'c revives, his symbiote having kept him alive. The Canon emerges and says that this proves they are evil and they will be sacrificed, along with Mary to Satan.
Teal'c is happy to be alive again.
The next morning the Unas arrives at the village and takes them away.
Jack annoys the Unas.
On the way to the gate they manage to escape by rolling down an embankment, the Unas goes after them. As they go through the woods the Unas catches up to them but Simon appears with Teal'c's' staff weapon, he shoots the Unas three times but it survives and goes after him.
Simon shoots at the Unas.
Mary manages to get the staff Simon dropped and Teal'c frees them, Sam and Daniel head off back to the gate while Jack and Teal'c go after Simon and the Unas. The Canon finds Simon, but so does the Unas, it hits Simon to the ground and goes for the Canon.
Jack and Teal'c arrive and find the Unas dead, both Simon and the Canon are okay, the Unas's wounds were to severe for it to survive for long. The Canon tells them his eyes have been opened and he gives Jack the ring, Jack says that they must bury the gate after SG-1 have left.
Jack, Teal'c, Simon and the Canon arrive back at the gate, Sam starts to dial but stops, she tells Jack the Goa'uld from the Unas is in the Canon, as he goes to attack them Jack shoots him.
The Canon is shot dead.
With his last breath the Canon asks for their forgiveness, after he dies Simon performs a prayer for suffering souls. SG-1 take their leave and Simon promises to bury the gate.
