THE PLOT

On the planet Duna the stargate activates, a giant pyramid stands in the background. SG-1 come through the gate and Jack is zatted, the others surrounded by warriors. A Jaffa comes out of the woods and asks them to identify themselves, the lead warrior of the locals, Derriean, says he knows them, they are SG-1 from the planet Earth, how dare they return here. SG-1 seem quite confused by it all. Derriean tells the Jaffa that SG-1 came to this world to help them fight the soldiers of Heru-ur, he turns to SG-1 and tells them that they lied about the Goa'uld leaving them alone, Cronos came in his ship and took the planet for his own. They turn back to where Jack was but he is gone, the Jaffa orders them to search for him.

At the great pyramid SG-1 are brought before Cindar, Cronos's first prime, he orders Jack found. The night Derriean arrives back at his house, he tells his wife that Cronos arrives tomorrow and he hopes they will be rewarded for capturing SG-1. His wife is acting rather strange and Jack appears from the shadows.

In their prison Daniel, Sam and Teal'c are discussing the situation, they are worried that Jack hasn't contacted them but assume it must be for fear of the Goa'uld tracking the radio signal. They decide not to tell the Goa'uld the truth.

Daniel, Sam and Teal'c in prison.

At Derriean's house Jack tells him that there are actually two of him but Derriean can't comprehend it, he tells Jack that when Cronos comes there will be no escape. Jack tells Derriean and his wife to close there eyes, when they reopen them he is gone.

The next day Cronos arrives. He calls the warriors of Duna before him and thanks them for there service, one of them is Jack in disguise. Cronos tells them that they will be rewarded and has the prisoners bought before them. Cronos calls Derriean forward and tells him to kill Daniel, he hesitates and Cronos threatens to kill all the warriors, Derriean activates the staff weapon and kills Daniel whose head rolls across the floor, when it stops they all see it is actually mechanical, Cronos is very surprised.

Daniel is killed.

On Earth the gate dials up and they receive a signal, it says Comtrya, the greeting used by the mechanical life form Harlan (Tin Man), they open the iris and he comes through the gate.

On Duna Cronos has Daniel's body taken to his ship, he also has Sam and Teal'c taken there and orders the others to search for Jack.

Back at the SGC Harlan tells them all what has happened. It appears the duplicates have taken advantage of some portable power packs and have gone off exploring the universe through the gate, they are very overdue and he wants SG-1's help to find them. He manages to persuade SG-1 to help and shows them the co-ordinates that his duplicates went to, they recognise it as Duna where they helped liberate the people from Heru-ur's men, they did tell the locals to bury the gate. They dial up the planet, the gate is not buried and send through a MALP and speak to the duplicate O'Neill, he tells them what has happened and SG-1 are given a go.

Hammond and Harlan wait anxiously.

On Duna Derriean speaks to his wife about what has happened, he doubts Cronos is a god as why would a god be surprised at anything? He goes to see the duplicate O'Neill and agrees to help him.

Arriving on Duna SG-1 meet Derriean and the duplicate O'Neill, they decide they must show the people of Duna that Cronos is not a god, they move off as jaffa near there position.

On Cronos's ship one of his Goa'uld underlings is torturing the duplicate Sam and Teal'c to find out how the power packs work.

Cronos's underling tortures Sam and Teal'c.

On the planet surface they decide to get to Cronos's ship via the rings in the pyramid, the duplicate Jack contacts Sam and Teal'c via an inbuild radio and asks for there help as the rings can only be operated from inside the ship. Once on the pel'tak level (command deck) they can shut off all the doors via a central control panal, thus leaving Cronos virtually unguarded, they will then kill him and offer the jaffa on the ship freedom.

On Cronos's ship his underling comes to him, Teal'c wishes an audience to bargain for Sam's life, he allows it.

The dastardly Goa'uld duo.

Going back to work Sam tells the female Goa'uld how the power packs work, but it is actually a self destruct mechanism, it blows up in her face killing her.

On the surface the duplicate Jack is taken before Cindar, Derriean kills him and SG-1 attack taking the pyramid, the duplicate Jack is injured in the process.

Teal'c is taken before Cronos, he kills the two guards and attacks Cronos, he starts to strangle him but another Jaffa arrives and shoots him.

Sam meanwhile gets to the rings control and transports SG-1 aboard. Teal'c goes off to the pel'tak to help the other Teal'c while Jack and the two Sam's make their way to the door controls.

As the Cronos is about to kill the duplicate Teal'c the real one arrives and zats the guard, he then tries to zat Cronos who absorbs the blasts with his ribbon device, he them fires the staff at Teal'c and knocks him to the ground.

Cronos turns on Teal'c.

He moves over to him and starts to torture him by attacking his symbiote.

Jack and the two Sam's have found the door controls but it is protected by an energy barrier, the duplicate Sam forces herself to push through the barrier and remove the control rods, the doors close, the duplicate Sam then dies.

The duplicate Teal'c has manages to summon enough strength to stand and retrieve a staff, he kills Cronos and then tells the real Teal'c it was for their father, he then dies.

Cronos is killed.

Jack transports back to the surface and tells Derriean to get his men, they will show them Cronos's body if they don't believe he is dead. After he has gone he talks to the duplicate Jack and acknowledges that they really are very much alike, he then watches as his duplicate dies.

Cronos's ship is then landed on the pyramid.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Cronos is now dead.

Daniel, Jack, Sam and Teal'c (the duplicates) are now dead.

Teal'c (both of them) are able to revenge the death of 'their' father by killing Cronos. This was a major part of Teal'c's life to seek revenge and it is now done. Will Teal'c be satisfied the duplicate did it? I expect so, when the duplicate died he said 'for our father', Teal'c nodded as he said it.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

  • The duplicate SG-1 team decided to start to explore the galaxy via the stargate using portable power packs.
  • Cronos claimed some of Heru-ur's territory after his death.

  • QUESTIONS POSED

  • SG-1 came to Duna to liberate the people from Heru-ur sometime between Fair Game (as Carter is a Major) and The Serpent's Venom (when Heru-ur died), but when exactly?
  • Did Cronos claim Duna for strategic reasons as Teal'c suggested?
  • Where did the duplicates get there weapons and uniforms from?
  • What will be done with Cronos's body? If the Goa'uld got it back could they revive him?
  • What will be done with Cronos's ship?
  • What will the System Lords do now? SG-1 have killed another one of them.
  • Can the duplicates be fixed?

  • BEST LINES/SCENES

Harlan: "Thank you for opening the doorway you call iris."
Jack: "Just for the record, I was opposed."

Hammond: "It seems your robot counterpart is equally as good as following orders as you!"

All the O'Neill/O'Neill stuff it wonderful.

    OVERALL THOUGHTS

Was this episode worth the wait? You damn sure it was, it was brilliant. It perfectly combined a number of story elements and also had humour (O'Neill/O'Neill stuff), emotion (the deaths of the duplicates) and tension (Derriean pondering killing duplicate Daniel). As all good story arc episodes do it closed and opened threads and was paced perfectly through out. For a first time directing job MS did a great job, lets hope that now he has had some experience we can have a little more Daniel in it the next time he directs. The sets, costumes, SFX, acting and music were wonderful. The only nit I have is that Cronos and his female underling make a great baddy partnership and they are both now dead, other than that this is the best episode of the season, can Exodus top it?
