Jack gives a Lt Barber some money, he has lost a bet with Daniel. Sam wants to know what the bet was over but Jack is very candid about it. As they are walking to the gate room Sam works out the bet was over her going on this mission to a planet where Daniel is studying something. As they dial up the 7th chevron Lt Barber suddenly runs towards the gate and is vaporised by the kawoosh.

Daniel returns to the SGC and they debrief. No one can give an explanation over Barber's suicide, he didn't seem depressed while on the mission. Moving onto the mission Daniel tells them about the disused Goa'uld Palace he has found, in the palace there is a pedestal that emits a beautiful light. Daniel has also brought back a small Goa'uld remote computer, he hopes it contains information on what exactly the place is.

Teal'c and Daniel are trying to translate the writings from the palace when Jack enters. On the video Teal'c has found someone moving in the background. Daniel meanwhile is acting very agitated as the remote computer is not working, he says they need to go back to the planet and Jack says they are going tomorrow morning but Daniel says they must go now and goes to confront Hammond. Hammond refuses to let them go early.

The next morning SG-1 are ready to depart but Daniel is nowhere to be found and is not answering his phone. Jack goes to Daniel's place and finds him hanging off the balcony a number of floors up. Daniel goes on about something but isn't making much sense, suddenly he seems to snap out of it and Jack grabs him.

At the SGC Daniel is in the infirmary hooked up to some machines. Dr Frasier says his brain chemistry has been mucked about with similar to being in withdrawal from drugs, yet there are no drugs in his system, the rest of the team he was with, SG-5, are in similar conditions, if they continue to degrade they could die. Jack says they need to go to the planet to see what is affecting them, Hammond agrees.

Arriving on the planet they see a boy who is trying to hide from them.

They see the light room Daniel told them about, it is beautiful and they all seem attracted to it. Jack manages to pull them away from it and they look around the rest of the palace. They enter a room and find a boy, his name is Loren. Jack asks him why people who had visited this place would become sick, he says he doesn't know. Hammond contacts them and says that SG-5 are all dead and Daniel is getting worst, he has dropped into a deep coma.

Jack returns to the SGC with blood samples, including that of Loren. A while later Jack gets frustrated with Dr Frasier for her slow progress, he is also coming down with the 'withdrawal' symptoms. Suddenly Daniel looses his pulse, they have to rush him back to the palace.

Arriving back in the palace Daniel starts to recover but it seems Sam and Teal'c are now attracted to the light, Jack has to go and pull them out. They discuss the situation, Jack believes it is the light that is making them ill when they leave, they will have to find out how to shut it off. Loren tells them they shouldn't turn it off but Jack doesn't listen.

Daniel contacts Hammond and has him send the Goa'uld computer. A little time later Daniel walks into the light room and finds the others transfixed by the light, he points the computer at the pedestal and it turns it off. They decide to use the time before they start getting withdrawn to explore and find a solution. Jack asks Loren what happened to his parents but he doesn't answer. Jack, Sam and Teal'c go to look around outside.

While walking on the beach Jack and Sam argue over protocol if they are going to be stuck here, they both put the argument down to withdrawal. Teal'c comes across some remains, they must be those of Loren's parents.

Returning to the palace they start to feel better again, it must be something else there other than the light that is causing this. Jack confronts Loren about it, knowing he knows something other than he is letting on, Loren opens up the pedestal and runs off, Jack goes after him. Jack finds Loren and apologises, Loren tells him that he killed his parents, but Jack doesn't believe him. Loren tells Jack that his parents become transfixed by the light, never leaving the room. One day Loren shut it all down and his parents left the room and wondered outside screaming and shouting, they drowned themselves, Jack says it wasn't his fault.

Loren confides in Jack.

Returning to the light room Sam and Daniel tell Jack that they have worked out that the device can be slowly lowered in power, thus allowing them to become free from its addiction, in 2-3 weeks they can leave, even Loren who Jack says they will take with them.
