THE PLOT

Prometheus is orbiting Earth. Inside the new crew led by Colonel Ronson is undergoing test drills. O'Neill and the rest of SG-1 are also aboard. O'Neill contacts Hammond and says he feels like they are getting in the way, Hammond tells him that they are needed there are SG-1 are the only people with experience of the ship. Ronson tells O’Neill that his crew need to be able to count on him and each other when the missions start properly. As they talk the ship drops out of hyperspace, they both go to the bridge. The ships engineer, Major Gant says the ship shouldn't have come out of hyperspace and that something is wrong.

Gant, Carter and Jonas go to the engine room. They find out the buffer that was installed to counter the instability of the Naquadria has failed due to them passing through an intense gravity field from a collapsing star, therefore the hyper drive has shut down. The hyper drive can be restarted but the buffer can't be fixed until they get back to Earth, something they can't do without the buffer as the element of Naquadria instability would be impossible to judge. Jonas informs them that a planet, P3X-744, that was listed on the Cartouche is within a short flight. They haven't been able to dial there before but it should have a stargate. They will have to use the hyper drive for a short flight, it is risky but they have no choice.

They drop out of hyperspace near the planet but the reactor goes critical, they have to eject it. The reactor explodes over the planet and releases an EMP pulse damaging the ships engines, shields and weapons. They quickly detect incoming missiles from the surface, they are coming straight at them. Jack decides to try and talk to them and broadcasts and apology and that they are explorers come here to meet them. They missiles self destruct and they are given landing co-ordinates.

SG-1 are met by a military force and taken to see Chairman Ashwon. He is delighted to meet another species as this is the first time anyone else has visited Tagrea. However the military leader Kalvas is not so pleased. SG-1 asks to borrow their stargate but they have never heard of it, when they are shown a picture of it they say that the 'ring of the gods' is a myth and doesn't exist. Ashwon is willing to let them study the Tagrean historical records to find any info about it. Kalvas isn't pleased at all and tells Ashwon he is allowing them to study for an attack.

Studying the data they find that it goes back no further than 300 years, the Tagreans past seems to have been removed. Ashwon and Kalvas are invited to Prometheus for a tour and dinner, Ronson isn't pleased but agrees to it. In exchange SG-1 will be able to study the Tagrean library. In the library Jonas & Teal'c are watched by a man. He eventually introduces himself as Taric Saloman, a Professor of Mathematics. He says he can help them find what they want.

Over the meal, Ashwon and Kalvas explain that their ancestors destroyed the records of the past after a long and terrible dark age, Kalvas says they don't want anything to do with it and that nostalgia makes them weak, but Ashwon is of a different mind. As they leave Ashwon tells Jack that he is perceived as being weak in matters of civil defence & Kalvas is gaining political support for his hard line views, there arrival hasn't helped and he hopes that SG-1 can find the stargate before things get out of hand.

Saloman shows Jonas and Teal'c an ancient scroll he has, it tells of the stargates location, in the wastelands near the city. Kalvas informs Ashwon that SG-1 wish to be taken to the co-ordinates where they think the gate is, he says he will not do it and it is a very bad idea. Ashwon orders him to take them. In the wastelands they find some monuments mentioned in the texts and start digging, they soon find the cover stones. As they begin to excavate the gate Kalvas watches from a distance. Once the gate is fully excavated Jonas activates it, Kalvas leads his men in and takes the people working on the gate prisoner.

Ashwon is furious at Kalvas actions, but Kalvas will not stand down. Ashwon tells O'Neill that the weapons pointed at Prometheus are under his control, they will not fire. O'Neill & Carter return to the ship and tell Ronson to take off, they have been told to deal with the situation. Ronson refuses to go as the shields are still down and he doesn't trust the Tagreans. Ashwon arrives on board and tells Ronson that if the guns open fire they will kill him as well, Ronson agrees to use the ship. The ship takes off with no problems.

O'Neill, Carter and Ashwon ring to the gate site. Ashwon orders Kalvas to stand down, he refuses. Ashwon makes an impassioned speech and orders Kalvas arrested by his men, after some hesitation Ashwon orders them again, they arrest Kalvas.

SG-1 depart back to Earth to get the materials they need to repair Prometheus while Ashwon informs them the crew are safe on the planet as his guests.
